Jefferson Davis Community College
Aho Architects provided professional services for the Leigh Library Expansion & Renovation project, one of 12 we completed for the college before it merged and became part of Coastal Alabama Community College (for whom we have completed more than 31 additional projects). This demonstrates our commitment to forming long-lasting relationships with our clients as their trusted advisors.
This project involved expanding the 11,000 s.f. library by infilling 3 of the 4 exterior porches. We also removed many of the original structure’s interior walls to create an open and inviting atmosphere, designed a new layout for stacks, and comprehensive interior finish, electrical, and mechanical upgrades.
Our design approach focused on creating a “Third Space,” similar to how a coffee shop or cafe which exists between the first and second spaces of home and work. This concept centers on fostering social interaction and gathering. Through our innovative design approach, we were able to help the College achieve more of its goals with this project than they initially thought possible. We are proud to report that the project was completed under budget, a recurring achievement for most of our projects.
